Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
نویسنده
چکیده
p ~atients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) and trigger points (TP) present to every health ! care provider. Despite vigorous treatment, patients with progressive MPS often request a referral to a pain specialist. MPS is a common regional pain syndrome associated with chronic soft tissue dysfunction. Patients with MPS suffer from persistent pain and may end up with a decreased range of motion. Frozen shoulder may be caused by MPS and TP involving subscapularis muscle. TP are distinct, tbcal, hyperirritalSle spots, and usually can be palpated in a taut band of skeletal muscle. They may cause both local and referred pain. MPS and TP are common pain generators in patients with chronic headache, neck. shoulder, and back pain. I Patients with MPS and TP over the gluteus minimus muscle may present with back and radicular leg pain mimicing lumbar disc disease. MPS and TP involvi/ig latissimus dorsi muscle should be part of the differential diagnosis of mid-thoracic backache. Skootsky et al. reported that as ,nany as 85% of patients presenting with low back pain to a general internal medicine practice might have myofascial TP as their source of pain. MPS and TP over the upper body was found to be more common in comparison to other region. 2

متن کاملA review of myofascial pain and fibromyalgia--factors that promote their persistence.
Chronic muscle pain (myalgia) is a common problem throughout the world. Seemingly simple, it is actually a difficult problem for the clinician interested in determining the aetiology of the pain, as well as in managing the pain. The two common muscle pain conditions are fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome. Fibromyalgia is a chronic, widespread muscle tenderness syndrome, associated with c...
متن کاملEffects of treatment of myofascial trigger points on the pain of fibromyalgia.
Myofascial pain syndromes (MPSs) from trigger points (TrPs) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are common musculoskeletal pain conditions that frequently coexist in the same patients. In recent decades, it has become evident that these entities greatly influence each other's clinical expression. FMS is mainly rooted in the central nervous system, while TrPs have a peripheral origin. However, the n...
متن کاملDifferential Diagnosis of Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
Objectives: This review examines diagnostic factors of myofascial pain syndrome [MPS] and fibromyalgia [FMS], and their differential diagnosis. Findings:A base of electrophysiologic and anatomic data exists that supports the clinical identification of myofascial trigger point [TrP] features. Included are electrical characteristics of the TrP, visualization of the taut band and strong support fo...
متن کاملFibromyalgia and Diffuse Myalgia
Chronic pain is one of the most common complaints encountered by primary care clinicians. Often, patients present not with well localized pain but with diffuse and nonspecific myalgias. Fibromyalgia is the most common etiology for this type of pain. In community-based studies, 2% [1] and 1.2% to 6.2% of school-age children screened positive for fibromyalgia [2–4]. Women and girls are at higher ...
